The RCOS Spring 2026 Season has finished!
Jacky Song | May 15, 2026
I am glad to announce that we have concluded another incredible season as part of the Rensselaer Center for Open Source (RCOS)! Over the course of just 4 months, our team has accomplished so much!
First off, let's give the stats! To say our team has been productive would be an understatement — even compared to our last RCOS season. Altogether, we made nearly 1,000 commits! Here's a breakdown:
| Repository | Commits |
|---|---|
| Elara laser research | 273 |
| Elara Handbook | 250 |
| Elara labs | 127 |
| Elara math (community edition) | 70 |
| Elara website | 53 |
| Infinitum | 42 |
| Elara symbolic | 18 |
| Elara spacecraft | 18 |
| Elara vote | 22 |
| All other repositories | 60 |
| Total | 933 |
Note: Commit numbers obtained by running the command
git rev-list --since="2026-01-13" --count @. Note that many commits were actually completed after the official end of RCOS, but prior to the end of the Spring 2026 development season, so they are still counted in.
Among our numerous accomplishments as a team are:
- Significant progress on our prototype free-electron maser, including making the world’s first open-source student-built undulator!
- A new release of our Elara Math library, with extensive new features and bugfixes
- The new Infinitum app for solving differential equations
- New Chinese translations for our website
- Major improvements in our mathematical modelling, as well as extensive atmospheric and electromagnetic simulations
- Several new chapters in our Handbook, written by 8 new authors
- And more!
More than anything, I am proud of our team. You are all exceptionally talented, intelligent, and capable of learning new things. You have overcome many challenges to get us to where we are today. I must also thank the faculty at RCOS, and particularly Professor Turner and Professor Sturman, for going above and beyond to support us and our cause.
Today, a chapter in our history closes — and a new one begins. I have confidence that we'll be able to navigate whatever challenges we face ahead, and build the brighter future we envision, together.
